We leave the comfort of Cartagena, Colombia for the open seas once again which will be one of our most challenging sails to date. The seas from Colombia to Jamaica are notorious for being rough: 30 knot winds in 10 foot seas at 4 seconds apart. You have to sail into the waves and wind that is hard on the boat and the crew. We experience charging issues that complicate the crossing. With only solar to charge the batteries, we limit our energy by turning off almost everything on the boat in order to have enough energy to keep the radar and autopilot working. Without these, the crossing would be even more dangerous. Sakura, Tomoko and Boss puked. Boss also peed in the cockpit, a first for him. Between the rough seas, waves crashing and breaking over the bow, the puke and pee in the cockpit, and the uncertainty of the batteries, we manage to cross in record time hitting speeds of almost 9 knots.
