Castleton is one of the most distinctive villages in England’s Peak District, set at the meeting point of two very different landscapes: the pale limestone plateau of the White Peak and the darker gritstone hills of the Dark Peak. Over millions of years, water has carved the surrounding limestone into caves, gorges, and hidden underground passages, creating one of Britain’s richest karst landscapes. Beneath the hills lie famous caverns such as Peak Cavern and Blue John Cavern, while above the village the dramatic ruins of Peveril Castle overlook the Hope Valley. Just to the west, Winnats Pass cuts a spectacular limestone gorge through the hills, its steep rock faces revealing the remains of an ancient tropical reef that formed here more than 300 million years ago. Castleton is also a gateway to some of the Peak District’s most iconic walks. The nearby Great Ridge route links Mam Tor to Lose Hill with sweeping views over Edale and the Hope Valley, while the long-distance Limestone Way begins here and winds south through the rolling landscapes of the White Peak. Around the village, traces of the area’s long mining heritage remain visible in places like Hope Quarry and the old lead mines that once dotted these hills. From the air, the valley reveals a landscape shaped by geology, history, and centuries of human life; a peaceful corner of Derbyshire where dramatic natural scenery meets one of the most fascinating geological stories in Britain.
