This webcast will take you on a virtual journey to South Africa, on the Amakhala Game Reserve, where TCU faculty and students are engaged in a conservation program focused on the rhino crisis. These magnificent animals are being poached at an alarming rate and we are “Fighting from the Fort” with a variety of initiatives: from helping with life-saving surgery in the field to demand-reduction campaigns in Asia. Dr. Mike Slattery, Ph.D., is director of the Institute for Environmental Studies and professor in the School of Geology, Energy & the Environment at TCU. He has written more than 80 scientific articles and published four editions of the book Contemporary Environmental Issues. His research focuses on human impacts on the environment, including the construction of dams on large-scale river systems, as well as the socio-economic and ecological impacts of utility-scale wind power development. In 2007, Dr. Slattery testified before the U.S. Congress on mercury contamination from coal-fired power plants. He has worked in diverse landscapes ranging from the Namib Desert in southern Africa to the cloud forests of Costa Rica where, in 2008, he established a tropical research station. In 2014, Dr. Slattery launched the TCU Rhino Initiative, a program based in South Africa and focused on community-based conservation and combating rhino poaching. He teaches a freshman course on environmental issues and upper-level/graduate courses on soils, hydrology, geomorphology, and weather and climate.
