Thirty endangered Père David's deer, also known as milu in China, were released into the wild on Sunday in the city of Yancheng, east China's Jiangsu Province. It is the fifth time for the Dafeng Milu National Natural Reserve to send Père David's deer, an animal under the highest level of protection in China, back in to the wild. The reserve said they have released a total of 83 Père David's deer since 1998 and has helped the number of wild Père David's deer increase to 295. To help the species survive in the wild, the Père David's deer consisted of 14 females and 16 males. Researchers also installed GPS devices on ten of them to track their movements. "We send them back to the wild to improve their genes and vitality of existing wild species; on the other hand, we can also intensify our research efforts by using GPS to track them," said Sun Daming, head of Administration Department of the Dafeng Milu National Natural Reserve. Officials said they hope the release of these animals into the wild can help them better adapt to the natural environment. "Having been raised in captivity, the meaning of this release of Père David's deer is to help them survive in the wild; helping them to reproduce and form wild species," said Zhang Dehui from the State Forestry Administration of China. The deer became extinct in China at the turn of the 20th century and it wasn't until 1985 that 22 of them returned from Britain. More on:http://www.cctvplus.com/news/20161018...
