Each year, thousands of patients across the United States are diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), or breast cancer that has spread to a different part of the body. In 2019, 30,650 individuals were diagnosed with breast cancer and 4,620 died from the disease in California alone. Metastatic breast cancer is the cause of nearly all these deaths. Interview responses and narrative data led to the discovery of barriers, from high costs of care to lack of support services. The findings were presented to the California Breast Cancer Research Program in June 2020. On April 28, three fact sheets on access to clinical trials, health insurance requirements, and palliative care were released in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
