The Gulfstream GIV-SP is a midsize cabin business jet with significant improvements including a larger cabin, longer-range and advanced development over the earlier Gulfstream GIV. The biggest improvement with the GIV-SP over the earlier Gulfstream models is the Rolls-Royce Tay engines which bring more efficient fuel burn and lowered noise emission. The Gulfstream GIV-SP is the first in the Gulfstream family to employ Goodyear Aerospace’s brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system, making maneuverability easier. The G-IV (SP) can seats up to 16 passengers in three discreet living areas. The most popular configuration has seating for 14 passengers and includes a 4-place club arrangement in the forward section, a 2-place club and divan in the mid-cabin, and 4-place conference seating in the aft section. Other configurations are available with seating options for 12 or 16 passengers. A full-service galley can be located in either the forward compartment or the aft section, but the most popular configuration is the aft galley. The baggage compartment, offering 169 cubic feet of space, is accessible in flight. The Gulfstream IV SP entered service in 1992. After serial number 1500, GIV SP models were modified and renamed the G400. As part of this modification, the brake-by-wire system was replaced with a hydro-mechanical system, landing gear was improved, and upgraded avionics were installed.
