Saturday, October 5th 1974. Footage of Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, the military Head of State of Ghana, visiting the annual Ngmayem Festival of the Shai people of the Dodowa area. Reuters Text: "The Colonel, who is also head of the National Redemption council (NRC), spoke to the people of the area about Ghana's need to be self-sufficient in food to withstand adverse international economic conditions. He was accompanied by other members of the NRC which assumed power after the army coup d'etat in early 1973. The Nmayem (sic - "Ngmayem") festival is held at the end of September or beginning of October. It is a time when Shai people return to their homes. The first of their crops are then harvested and become offerings to the Gods. The Durbar is also a time for family reunions and the settlement of petty differences that have occurred during the preceding year. The family gathers together with all their relatives and eats from the "lalaka", or family plate, as a symbol of peace, love and solidarity." Source: Reuters News Archive.
