when I began writing the lyrics for this song back in december, i initially approached the phrase “a slip of the tongue” through a freudian lens: an accidental error in speech that unintentionally reveals the speaker’s subconscious feelings. but then I thought, well, why not give the phrase a literal meaning as well? like, the act of slipping your tongue into someone else’s mouth. it made the whole thing really icky. i was reading Lolita at the time, and I think what basically happened is I started writing a song from the perspective of the main character, humbert humbert, who is a paedophile. that was about a year ago, during my post-punk/gothwave era, when I was really into exploring themes that touched on the darker side of human nature, like the subconscious, social taboos, and moral ambiguity. i remember thinking that the line “i could tell that she liked it by the way she moaned” was particularly ingenious, because while you can moan in pleasure, you can also moan in pain. it’s a really fucked up way to end a song. it’s almost like one of those spine-chilling twists you get in short horror stories. i will admit, this is probably the most difficult listen on the ep, not only because of what I’ve just said. it takes ages to get to the chorus, and I kind of regret having that first verse go on for so long - but I just couldn’t bring myself to cut out any of the lyrics. it would have ruined the whole vibe of the story. anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say for this one. hopefully it gives you a newfound appreciation for a song that takes 1:30 minutes of tedious guitar plucking to get to the point.
