Rathna Ella | දිය ඇල්ල | நீர்வீழ்ச்சி | or Rathnella is located in Hasalaka city, Kandy district. It is 101 meters high (14th highest) and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Rathna Ella brings water to more than 200 farmers, mostly working in paddy fields. After a 30 min hike, we reach the point where we can carefully cross the river. A first pond is suitable for swimming when the weather and the level of water is appropriate, but for good swimmers. then we reach the middle level where we can get to the bottom of the the main fall and also enjoy the water. After 4 attempts we finally found a local man who took us to the top of the waterfall. The hike is rather tough with no defined path on a steep rocky mountain side. But it is worth the effort as the view is breathtaking when you reach the summit. In fact after enjoying the waters on the top, we crossed the river and climbed over big rocks to reach another treasure, a splendid, large but less high waterfall. The fun part is to get close to the waterfall rock walls and let the water flow above your heads: a magic and fun moment. When grey clouds started to show up, we had to go back down without delay as it would be very messy and dangerous to go down the slopes in wet weather conditions.
