In this SAS Demo, David Stern shows you how to manage the storage and retention period for log data in SAS Viya Monitoring for Kubernetes (https://github.com/sassoftware/viya4-.... We'll find the size of the Kubernetes Persistent Volume Claims (PVCs) used to store log data. We will see how to calculate the actual size of log data indices in OpenSearch, in total or for a single day. We will also consider how to find the size of the underlying files managed by OpenSearch in its PVCs, which can be significantly larger than sizes of the size of the log data indices alone. And we will find the current log data retention period and see how to change it and apply the new period to existing indices. David Stern has been at SAS for over 14 years and focuses on SAS administration, especially observability, authorization, and migrations. Excel formula shown: Units (L3): =RIGHT(F3,2) Value (M3): =VALUE(LEFT(F3,LEN(F3)-2)) Kb (N3): =IF(L3="mb",M3*1024,M3) Series of bash concatenated commands to report actual OpenSearch PVC disk usage in our NFS file server. Report size of individual directories: for f in /srv/nfs/kubedata/v4mlog-v4m-search-v4m-search-* ; do sudo du -xs $f; done Report total across all those directories: for f in /srv/nfs/kubedata/v4mlog-v4m-search-v4m-search-* ; do sudo du -xs $f | awk '{print $1}'; done | paste -sd+ | bc Same, but convert to Mb: for f in /srv/nfs/kubedata/v4mlog-v4m-search-v4m-search-* ; do sudo du -xs $f | awk '{print $1}'; done | paste -sd+ | bc | awk '{print "scale=1;"$1"/1024"}' | bc | awk '{print $1"M"}' Same, but convert to Gb: for f in /srv/nfs/kubedata/v4mlog-v4m-search-v4m-search-* ; do sudo du -xs $f | awk '{print $1}'; done | paste -sd+ | bc | awk '{print "scale=1;"$1"/(1024*1024)"}' | bc | awk '{print $1"G"}' Note: NFS is not ideal for production use. If your OpenSearch PVCs use another storage class, the total file size in the OpenSearch PVCs should be measured in a way appropriate to that storage class.
