This Earth Day 2025, Ohio State’s Environmental Professionals Network is highlighting the sustainability stories of natural fibers as they travel from farm to fashion. Ensuring sustainability in the fashion industry requires a significant variety of leaders at different stages of the supply chain, ranging from agricultural producers to fashion designers and even to consumers, to implement pro-environmental decisions. We'll be joined by over a dozen farmers, designers, and sustainability leaders from across the country who will share their unique “farm to fashion” stories of cotton, wool, hemp, and flax at this signature Earth Day celebration! 0:00 Tim Haab, PhD, director, Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) provides welcome remarks and ENR Honorary 100 Induction. 11:55 Kendra Wecker, Chief, Division of Wildlife, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), recognizes 2025 ENR Honorary 100 Inductee, Steven Gray, Assistant Director, ODNR. 16:13 Joe Campbell, PhD, Senior Lecturer, SENR, and Harrison Fried, PhD, Director, EPN, introduce the evening's Farm to Fashion program. 20:32 Lisa Goldsand, Circular Thrift, LLC provides background on the farm to fashion topic, including historical and contemporary contexts, and emerging trends. 28:19 Tasha Lewis, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Human Sciences, The Ohio State University speaks on her farm to fashion experiences, and the opportunities and challenges with building sustainable farm to fashion systems. 32:58 Helen Trejo, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Apparel Merchandising and Management, Huntley College of Agriculture in Cal Poly Pomona, presents an overview of her research program on farm to fashion topics in wool, including specific USDA project activities with students, community engagement, and "virtual reality" agricultural experiences to reach a broader public. Farm to fashion stories for three important fibers: wool, cotton, and hemp. The speakers listed below will provide complementary agricultural and fashion viewpoints for each of the three fibers through a “Pecha Kucha”-style presentation, which is a story-telling format where presenters share 18 photographs for 20 seconds each (6 minutes). 47:44 Jess Boeke & Sarah Pottle (Rust Belt Fibershed) showcase how the Rust Belt Fibershed weaves together growers and producers to elevate the importance of local fiber, local color, and local labor in the fashion supply chain. 56:44 Laurel Shouvlin & Celeste Malvar-Stewart illustrate their wool fiber partnership from alpaca farm to runway. 1:03:58 Troy Bridgeforth (Bridgeforth Farms) presents the story of Bridgeforth Farms with "Planting the Future" 1:10:38 Sarah Moore (Victoria’s Secret Co.) shares how Victoria's Secret started partnering with U.S. farmers in sourcing their cotton. 1:17:56 TJ Richardson & Justin Helt (The Ohio Hemp Co.) provide an overview of the historical and contemporary agricultural production of hemp as a fiber. 1:26:17 Abbe Turner (Common Greens) & Lily Turner present: "With Loving Hands: Rediscovering genetic heritage through flax farming and fashion design" 1:32:48 Dr. Haab concludes program.
