We went from Alpnachstad to the top of Pilatus and now we'll share it with you! ABOUT US: We are two 60-somethings who are fortunate enough to be able to smell the roses---and we do---while we still can! We don't like videos in which the content creator is the star of the show. We prefer to show you what you want to see: the surroundings, the physical space and the atmosphere. We want to impart good, useful information to help you plan your travels! We give you how-to-guides, flight reviews, airline lounge tours, train excursions, cruise information, info about boat rentals, amazing hikes and luxury lodging, garden tours and 4K walkabouts. The railway opened in June of 1889 and operates seasonally: May to October. One way fare to the peak is 39 CHF (before discounts). Total travel time is about 28 minutes. While the cogwheel railway operates seasonally, the summit can also be reached year-round by the aerial panorama gondolas and aerial cableways from Kriens. Pilatus has fortified radar (part of the Swiss FLORAKO system) and weather stations on the Oberhaupt summit. The Pilatus Railway is the steepest rack railway in the world, with a maximum gradient of 48% and an average gradient of 35%. The line runs from Alpnachstad, on Lake Alpnach, to a terminus near the Esel summit of Pilatus at an elevation of 2,073 m (6,801 ft). The Locher rack system (used on this railway) has gear teeth cut in the sides rather than the top of the rail, engaged by two cog wheels on the locomotive. This system allows use on steeper grades than the other systems, whose teeth could jump out of the rack. The line is 4.6 km (2.86 mi) long, climbs a vertical distance of 1,629 m (5,344 ft), and is of 800 mm (2 ft 7½ in) gauge. Because of the rack-system, there are no conventional points or switches on the line, only rotary switches and traversers. All rails are laid on solid rock, securing rails by high-strength iron ties attached to the rock, without using any ballast. The line still uses original rack rails that are now over 100 years old! While they have worn down, this can be fixed by simply turning the rails over, providing a new wearing surface that would be sufficient for the next century as well. 00:00 intro 02:13 how it works 02:47 specs for rail geeks 22:00 approaching the summit
