NASA After nearly 15 years in space, NASA's NEOWISE (Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) mission has come to an end. Launched in December 2009 as WISE, the spacecraft was initially tasked with mapping the entire sky in infrared light. In 2013, it was repurposed to focus on detecting and tracking near-Earth objects (NEOs), such as asteroids and comets. NEOWISE's contributions have been monumental. It discovered over 200 previously unknown NEOs and provided valuable data on thousands of other objects. The mission officially concluded on July 31, 2024, and the spacecraft was turned off on August 8, 2024¹².
