Chess in Hell: USSR Emerges from the War as the Strongest Chess Power

We continue to explore the history of Soviet chess and the USSR's rise to chess dominance. In the 1940s, the entire world was plunged into hell. Of course, there was no time for chess. But Soviet chess players continued to hone their skills even during the harshest war years. Finally, in 1944, the USSR decided to hold a national championship. It became clear just how impressive the Soviets' wartime advance had been while everyone else had abandoned chess. It turned out that a whole group of world-class grandmasters had emerged in the country. The USSR no longer had just Botvinnik: Smyslov, Bronstein, Kotov, and Boleslavsky were already world-class chess players. Here, a characteristic feature of the USSR championships that would later emerge was the first to emerge: there were no underdogs. Weak players simply didn't play in the USSR championships.
