A few images of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland tour from Belfast to Dublin and Waterford in May. The starring role was played by 4-4-0 No. 85 'Merlin' which dates from 1932 and is the last remaining full-sized compound at work in the British Isles. In its heyday it worked the crack expresses over the 112 mile route from Dublin to Belfast. There were few opportunities for passengers on the tour to catch No. 85 at work - and most of the photographic locations were water stops or terminus stations. Still, it was great to travel behind such a amazing survivor (there were only five V Class built and the other four were scrapped) and to experience the 5' 3" Irish gauge!
