22.06.1974 Kusocinski Memorial, BKS “Skra” Stadium, 18.15 Hr: 1. Szewinska 49.9 (49.8 - 49.9 - 49.9), 2. Krystyna Kacperczyk 52.5, 3. Danuta Piecyk 53.3, 4. Irén Orosz (HUN) 53.7, 5. Genowefa Nowaczyk 54.0, 6. Bozena Zientarska 54.3. On 13 June, Irena Szewinska ran a 200m in 22.0 (22.21), breaking the world record held by her great rival Renate Stecher. After the race, her husband and coach Janusz Szewin replied that there was "absolutely no problem" when asked whether Irena would be able to conquer the 50-second barrier over 400m. It happened 9 days later, for her second attempt over the distance, after a relaxed debut in 52.0 in september 1973. On lane 2, she went through 200m in 22.9 hand time. The video time was 23.2, and at 300m she ran 36.2 which was a world best. Her 400m video time was 50.2 (time to the hundredth anywhere between 50.11 and 50.20). Later that year, the Polish legend ran a 4x400m anchor leg in 48.5 at the European Champs in Rome, where she won 100m and 200m titles. Szewinska improved her the world record two more times in 1976, 49.75 and 49.29 to win the Olympic Games. She would remain unbeaten in 36 finals until her loss to Marita Koch at the 1978 European Championships.
