This is what Australia’s ship-building industry looked like in the early 1970s. The ‘Clutha Capricorn’ was built in 1972 at the Whyalla Shipbuilding and Engineering Works, located on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. It weighed 83,000 tonnes and was one of the largest ship’s ever built in Australia. The Clutha Capricorn had a contract with Queensland Alumina to carry 3-million tonnes of bauxite a year from Weipa to Gladstone on the Queensland coast. The bauxite was then made into aluminium. The ship is said to have been scrapped in China in 1984. The Whyalla Shipbuilding and Engineering Works closed in 1978, after 66 ships were built at the yards.
