China's 40,000km high-speed rails stretching to Tibet, Xinjiang and more western regions

China has greatly expanded its high-speed rail network over the past decade to the country's western regions, featuring harsh natural environment. A total of 17 railway stations have been set up along the Yarlung Zangbo River in SW China’s Tibet Autonomous Region since 2015, at the altitude exceeding 3,500 meters. Jamyang Lodre is a child living in Gonggar County and he was 11 when the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway opened to traffic in June 2021. To build railways in Alpine-cold regions or sites, engineers have developed unique engineering machinery such as the hard rock tunneling machines. China has recently completed the world’s first desert-railway loop line stretching 2,712 kilometers in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The total length of railways in western China exceeded 60,000 kilometers, accounting for 40 percent of the country's total.
