Bertha Mason (Cartoon)

This is a reinterpreted video of Bertha Mason, a crazy woman who appears as a villain in Jane Eyre. All the while, readers have taken Rochester's word for it and interpreted Bertha Mason as the "mad lady in the attic." I have been teaching this novel for the past 17 years, and I have come to question it. "Why do readers believe Rochester's words without doubt?" So I made two assumptions if. 1) It's not that Bertha is trapped because she's crazy, she's crazy because she's trapped by Rochester? 2) How would the ending change if Jane had made a different choice? I wanted to share my interpretation with other readers, so I drew it as a cartoon. I hope you enjoy watching my cartoons.
