They aren't, though. You see, treat training is when your dog already has everything he or she needs. And the treats you're offering are now more of a bonus than anything. Well, why should your dog listen to you when all you're offering is a BONUS and your dog is staring down a squirrel or another dog or someone just rang the doorbell or some other type of distraction. Not to mention, if your dog has any aggression issues or anxiety problems is he or she going to want to take a treat from you? Or are they going to want to give in to the distraction? You probably already know the answer to that. That's why it's important that, instead of using treats, you use food as a RESOURCE to train your dog. The difference? Food as a resource gets your dog to focus on YOU and see you in a leadership role. Whereas treat training and clicker training do more to train your dog to listen to a treat...and not you. Using food is great. But you must use it as a resource and not as a treat.
