🏰 Laugharne Castle – A Journey Through History | Wales’ Timeless Fortress 🇬🇧 Discover the rich story of Laugharne Castle, one of Wales’ most evocative historic sites, perched dramatically above the River Tâf estuary in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. 📜 History of Laugharne Castle Laugharne Castle’s history stretches back over 900 years. Originally established around 1116 as a simple fortification by the Norman lord Robert Courtemain, it began as an earth and timber stronghold defending the strategically important south-west Welsh coast. ✔ Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was a focal point in the struggle between Norman forces and powerful Welsh princes. It was captured and burnt on multiple occasions by figures such as Rhys ap Gruffudd and Llywelyn the Great as control of the region ebbed and flowed. ✔ By the mid-13th century, the structure had been rebuilt in stone, incorporating impressive curtain walls and twin towers, making it a formidable Norman stronghold. ✔ In the late 16th century, Elizabeth I granted Laugharne to Sir John Perrot, who transformed it from a military fortress into a grand Tudor manor house with large windows and comfortable living quarters — a testament to the changing fortunes of the site. ✔ During the English Civil War in the 1640s, the castle once again became a battleground. It was besieged by Parliamentary forces, heavily damaged by cannon fire, and then deliberately slighted (partially demolished) to prevent its future military use. Today, the castle remains a romantic ruin, where visitors can explore its towers, impressive walls, and once-grand Tudor hall. The site is cared for by Cadw, Wales’ historic environment service, and is a scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed building. 📍 The Castle & Its Surroundings The castle sits above the tidal estuary of the River Tâf, offering spectacular views across Carmarthen Bay and the Welsh coastline. Laugharne itself is an ancient settlement with roots in the medieval kingdom of Deheubarth, and its historic street layout still reflects its long heritage. 📌 Laugharne Town: A charming coastal town, Laugharne offers picturesque streets, Georgian houses, and several historic sites — including the medieval Town Hall and Island House. 📌 Dylan Thomas Connections: The castle has a special literary significance thanks to Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who lived in Laugharne in his later years. He penned parts of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog from a summerhouse overlooking the castle grounds, and the nearby Dylan Thomas Boathouse and writing shed draw visitors from around the world. 📌 Scenic Walks & Attractions: Nearby you’ll find riverside paths, estuary views perfect for bird-watching, and historic pubs — including Dylan’s favourite, Brown’s Hotel, making Laugharne a delightful blend of history, literature, and natural beauty. 📌 Further Area Highlights: Just a short drive away are broader Carmarthenshire attractions such as the wide sands of Pendine Beach and attractions along the Wales Coastal Path for outdoor lovers. 💡 Why Visit Laugharne Castle? ✨ A unique fusion of medieval architecture and Tudor grandeur ✨ Rich connections to Welsh history and literary heritage ✨ Stunning views over the River Tâf estuary ✨ A quaint and historic Welsh coastal town full of character 📌 Like this video?
