The Forum - "The River Is Wide" (Billy Admire; Gary Knight) From their lone 1967 album of the same name as the titular track, reissued on CD on the Rev-Ola label. BACKGROUND: The Forum was a vocal group organized by Les Baxter whose members were Phil Campos, Riselle Bain and Rene Nole - the latter of whom would later marry Campos. The group had evolved from an earlier folk music group called Les Baxter's Balladeers. Campos, Bain and Nole split off into The Forum in 1966 as part of the folk rock craze. They had one hit record in 1967 on Mira Records with "The River Is Wide", featured here complete and uncut. This was in fact their debut release originally recorded in 1966 on Penthouse Records (which was founded by Pat Boone), however, this initial version never gained any attention. They then proceeded to remix and re-record the song a second time around May 1967 on Penthouse's subsidiary label, Mira Records. Initially, this second version didn't get much attention either; though that would start to change when the UK Decca label got a hold of the master and the song started climbing the UK charts. This managed to grab the attention of a DJ in Seattle, Washington, and things finally picked up steam for "The River Is Wide"; not only did it become a huge hit in regions such as the Los Angeles metro, this would eventually peak at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, and as they say, the rest is pretty much history. Compared to the original single version that has been issued time and time again on many compilation and "greatest hits" albums, this should have been the version used on the original Mira 45 (in my opinion).
