Today’s travel adventure Modernism Museum, Mt Dora, Fl to view David Bowie Memphis Collection Exhibit. The museum owners purchased 12 pieces of Memphis Group furniture from David Bowie Estate. He was an avid collector and had an extensive collection. Ettore Sottsass, Jr., a prominent figure in Italian design, founded the Milan Memphis group to bridge the gap between avant-garde creativity and commercial product design. Drawing on his experience with major companies such as Olivetti and Poltronova, Sottsass sought to integrate artistic innovation with mass production. The Memphis initiative began as a collaboration with Abet Laminati, aiming to create a collection of furniture utilizing their plastic veneers. Sottsass assembled a team of younger designers to contribute to the project. The group’s name, inspired by Bob Dylan’s song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” reflects both American pop culture and a subtle reference to the ancient Egyptian city.
