Lois Day takes us on a visual tour of her wine-making family through the generations in the Napa Valley. Ms. Day’s grandfather, Jean Chaix, was a French horticulturist who decided at age 23 to set off for the Napa Valley, after hearing about its soil and wine-making potential. Upon arrival in 1874 he took a cellar job in Yountville, where he became close friends with a fellow worker, Jean Adolphe Brun. In 1877, the two friends formed a partnership, A. Brun & Co. Jean Brun was then 32 and had wine making experience, while Jean Chaix, now 26, had experience growing grapes, making for an ideal blending of skills and resources. This marked the beginning of the Chaix family history in the Napa Valley. This presentation was part of the 2022 Susanne Salvestrin Memorial Lecture Series hosted by the St. Helena Historical Society.
