Aronia berries. Oh yes, we’re diving right in today because it’s come to my attention that not nearly enough of us fully understand the benefits of growing a chokeberry bush or two in the garden. They don’t get the amount of hype they fully deserve and I’m changing that. So without further ado, here are the top 5 reasons you should be growing your own Aronia berries. #5 Chokeberry bushes are great landscaping plants! Before we get into the berries themselves I’d like to give some love to Chokeberry bushes. We’re a nursery so I’d be doing a disservice to you if I didn’t mention some great ones. Black Chokeberry bush is rated for growing zones 3-8 and produces the classic black berries but if you live further south then red chokeberry might be better suited as it’s hardy from growing zones 4-9. It offers the same superfruit but in the form of red berries instead of black. Try Iroquois Beauty Black chokeberry if you’re looking for a smaller option. It’s rated for growing zones 3-7 and will only get to be 2-3 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. As a note, all of these are self-pollinating. #4 Aronia berries are hard to find in stores I always keep an eye out for these but unless you’re perusing the highly specialized stores, you’re probably going to come up empty-handed. Which is a bummer, but if you have a few shrubs growing in the back yard you can always pick your harvest when they’re ripe and freeze them to enjoy all year long. Impress your neighbors and friends by giving them a bowlful for them to take home and enjoy themselves. #3 Growing your own Aronia berries is extremely cost-effective After striking out at the grocery stores, you might simply look up Aronia berries for sale from specialty growers. That’s when you’ll notice the price. They make regular old blueberries seem cheap! (if you know you know). If you’re wanting to enjoy Aronia berries regularly, it makes a lot more sense to spend money on the chokeberry bush once than to buy berries once they’re harvested! #2 Aronia Berries are great for baking and eating! The berries right off the bush probably won’t be your favorite snack. However, give them a quick puree or add a little sugar and make them into a jam and you’ll be hooked! You can also make Aronia syrup to pour over pancakes and french toast. A personal favorite for the summertime is Aronia berry Cheese Cake Popsicles made with berries, greek yogurt, honey, a little vanilla and lemon. Check it out here: https://www.superberries.com/aronia-c.... They’re also a popular addition to teas, wines, and even coffee. #1 Aronia berries are SUPER good for you! And finally, the absolute best reason to grow your own Aronia berries is that they have AMAZING health benefits. In just one ounce, Aronia berries have 10% of your daily value of vitamin c. They’re a great source of fiber, manganese, and especially antioxidants. In fact, Aronia berries have over 4 times as many antioxidants as blueberries! They’ve been known to help with inflammation and have been shown to help protect cells from potentially harmful molecules. If you aren’t at least curious at this point then I’m not sure I can help you. Adding chokeberry bushes to your garden is a win-win-win for you, your landscape, and your health.
