Welcome to day seven of Tiger Barb's August Odyssey and what a day it was! We were blessed with nice weather and we had a truly wonderful day. Unfortunately, the day didn't start out great. The sky was overcast when we rolled out of bed, so we relaxed and had a late breakfast and waited for Sol to make his appearance in Quebec's Eastern Townships. Sometime around 11:00 it started to brighten up, so Tiger Barb and I jumped on the bike and headed out on a tour designed by the one and only Mart Cooper. Mort had recommended half a dozen sites in the area and we tried to fit them all into one great day. I had the GPS set on maximum adventure and it led us along a scenic route through farmland and forests. Along the way, we crossed a covered bridge. Twice actually! Our first site of interest was Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, which is known for its mission established in 1845. I think that it is noteworthy that the town was known as Kateville. I guess that it is considered blasphemous to refer to a saint by her shortened name. LOL. Our next stop was the gorgeous lakeside village of North Hatley. The village was founded in 1887 and is likely the most beautiful small village in Quebec. Not long after leaving North Hatley, we came across a sign for a covered bridge. I love bridges and covering them just adds to their charm. This area has several covered bridges and the tourism board has a Covered Bridge Route map taking you to all 15. I didn't discover this until we got back home. Anyhow, we headed down the road to the covered bridge. After riding across it the first time, I did a u-turn and headed back across, then up onto the highway. We continued on highway 108 until we reached highway 143 south towards Coaticook. We had been riding for about 15 minutes when I saw a sign for a covered bridge. I turned off the highway and followed a meandering dirt road for several kms. When we reached the covered bridge it was the other end of the same bridge that we crossed earlier. LMFAO! Eventually, we reached the Coaticook Gorge park and it was great. The was free parking and it was just $10 each to enter. In the park, we crossed the Coaticook River on the World's longest pedestrian suspension bridge and then walked the boardwalk along the river. Absolutely fantastic! Next, we climbed the observation tower and then hiked the Mountain Trail. There was no one on this trail besides us. We walked alongside a small river that had a cascading series of beautiful waterfalls. It was just too attractive not to go in, so we took our shoes off and played in the freezing cold water. After our hike, we rode to the world famous Coaticook Dairy and had ice cream. So good! All sugared up, we rode some backroads through massive dairy farms on our way to Stansted. Stansted is home to the Haskell Opera House and Free Library which spans the border with Canada and USA. It is hilarious that this place exists! Google it. You should know that the GPS gets very confused around here because the border actually runs through town, and some buildings. We accidentally got to the border crossing and did a quick U-turn to find our way to the Opera House. Unfortunately, with our late start, by the time that we got there the Opera House was closed and we had to make do with a few photos at the obelisk marking the border line. Finally, we headed back to Magog to enjoy Quebec's national dish; rotisserie chicken with poutine at Benny&Co. When in Rome eh! I love you all.
