“Resisting Racial Oppression, Advancing Justice for All" (Helen Neville)

The Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict, and Violence (Division 48 of the American Psychological Association) hosted this webinar — “Resisting Racial Oppression, Advancing Justice for All: Lessons from Black Scholars and Black Social Movements” — on February 26, 2026. Our speaker was psychologist Helen Neville, the Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology, a professor of Educational Psychology and African American Studies, and a Center for Advanced Studies Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Drawing on her 30+ years of research in psychology and Black Studies, Dr. Neville examined expressions of racism, resistance, and healing in the current moment. In recognition of Black History Month, she highlighted key lessons from Black scholars and Black social movements to help us better understand the present crisis and identify possible pathways forward.
