MAP (Mentor Advocacy Program) is the student-driven, early intervention component of the larger Culture Of Calm initiative that was designed to reduce student related violence through intensive mentoring. CPS has identified 10,000 high risk students based on a range of factors including attendance, behavior, and academic performance. Profiles of these students indicated a population struggling with truancy, academic underperformance, gang activity and affiliation, juvenile justice history and community poverty. CPS matched each student with a mentor from a mentor agency contracted to work within the student's respective school. The intensive mentoring was aimed at equipping the students in gaining the tools needed to succeed inside and outside the classroom. Mentors began engagement attempts in September of 2010 with 1700 of the highest risk students from the 10,000 students identified for mentoring services. The program concluded October of 2011
