Born in Amsterdam, Brands studied commercial art at the Amsterdam Academy of Arts. After graduating, he spent several months working as a designer for several advertising agencies before devoting himself to full-time art. Very early on, he created assemblages from found objects. He also begins to work on painting and language. During the Second World War, he was influenced by the concept of automatic writing of the surrealists, created images using charcoal, ink and gouache and inspired by the universe, he also developed a vast collection ritual objects and music from Africa.
