Independent Political Organizations (IPO's) are winning elections; organizing bases of voters and electing like-minded candidates. What's next? Governance. This panel event, hosted live on November 18, 2021 and featuring Senator Bernie Sanders' Chief of Staff and former IPO leader Misty Rebik, Illinois State Senator Robert Peters and the Working Families Party's Natalia Salgado, examines the capacity, strength, need and growth edge for people's political organizations working to advance their members' agendas in government. This event was the first of a three-part series focused on Independent Political Organizations. The conversation was moderated by Ryan Greenwood, lecturer at the Tisch College of Civic Life and on sabbatical from People's Action, where he co-founded the Movement Politics Department that built Independent Political Organizations across the country. Ryan also co-founded the IPO TakeAction Minnesota. ABOUT THE SERIES From the Sunrise Movement to Tea Party Patriots, Independent Political Organizations (IPO's) not controlled by either political party are increasingly determining election and policy outcomes in American politics. This three-part series examines IPO's internal structure as well as their role in governance and elections. IPO leaders, candidates, elected officials and campaign staff are featured. The series is moderated and organized by Tisch College lecturer, Ryan Greenwood. The second and third events of this series will occur virtually in early 2022.
