In this video, we take a look at the Fokker G.1, a twin-engine heavy fighter from the Netherlands, designed and made before the start of World War II. We first talk about the Netherlands pre-WW2, talking about their misguided belief in staying neutral and effectively appeasing Germany. We talk about their very late rearmament effort, and how that doomed them to fall in less than a week. We then talk about their surprisingly solid aircraft designs, particularly in the G.1. We talk about its unique (for the time) design and powerful armament that led to it receiving the nickname of "The Reaper" and some calling in the deadliest fighter in Europe. We talk about how it compared to the Messerschmitt Bf 110 and Potez 630, two other heavy fighters developed around the same time. We talk about the international and domestic interest it received, how it saw a small production run, and how it put up a valiant-if-futile effort against Germany. We end by talking about its late-WW2 career, how the design may have evolved if it was given more time to grow and evolve, and how it could have been the effective ancestor of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.
