With the countdown on to the 70th running of the New Zealand Grand Prix next weekend, we continue our journey through the iconic moments that have shaped its history, with Episode 3 now turning the focus to one of the event’s most memorable chapters, the 1960s. Hosted by former New Zealand Grand Prix winner Greg Murphy, the episode looks back on a true golden era for the event. Murph talks through a remarkable list of winners from the decade, a real who’s who of motorsport icons, including Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, and Graham Hill, alongside local legends Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. Episode 3 also charts a major shift in the event’s history, as the New Zealand Grand Prix moved from Ardmore Circuit to the iconic Pukekohe Park Raceway, a venue that would become synonymous with the race in the decades to follow. We also hear from 50-time New Zealand Grand Prix starter and three-time winner Kenny Smith, who reflects on his journey with the event, from first watching the Grand Prix in the 1950s to making his debut in 1964 at Pukekohe Park Raceway in a Lotus 22. The episode also features insight from three-time Formula One World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, who reflects on his time racing in New Zealand during the 1960s, including a memorable off-track moment that nearly prevented him from lining up. Be sure to keep an eye out for Episode 4, as the series moves into the next era of competition, with the countdown continuing toward the NAPA 70th New Zealand Grand Prix at Highlands Motorsport Park.
