www.AbandonedAR.com/winslow-elementary/ WINSLOW, AR -- Finding the hidden gems and history of life in Arkansas is the goal of a group of photographers traveling across the Natural State, taking pictures of old, dilapidated buildings. They call themselves "Abandoned Arkansas." Michael Schwarz, James Kirkendall and Eddy Sisson hope to preserve history of everyday life, looking for beauty even in the mundane, like the remains of an abandoned classroom and other items they find in places like the old elementary school in Winslow -- a building people in town are trying to save from demolition. They believe in giving life to the "many stories to tell" by the items left behind. Some of the buildings the photographers document are slated for demolition, or may be decaying for years. "Abandoned Arkansas" seeks to immortalize those places, and the history of everyday life, through its work. They say they may not be looking for ghosts, but it's exciting to step into creepy, pitch-black rooms, with rumors swirling about hauntings. For one of the photographers, the school in Winslow brings back memories of another school, in rural Oklahoma. Dunjee High School closed in 2004 -- and when you walk in, it looks like every student just got up and left. After a fire tore through the remains of the building, "Abandoned Arkansas" headed to the school to document the aftermath. He recalls a lady standing in the hall, crying -- her husband wanted to buy the high school he graduated from and turned it into a school for underprivileged kids. But he died suddenly. His surviving wife couldn't maintain the school, so she closed it. She told "Abandoned Arkansas" the building was the only memory she had left of her husband. That encounter highlighted the importance of the photographers' work, documenting the historic buildings they hope can still be rescued. "It's not just cool pictures," they say. "I think it's really cool to preserve history in that way." You can watch the story of "Abandoned Arkansas" above -- and learn more about their work by visiting their website.
