I just love saving random things from the metal recycling yard. This is a universal hand-operated winch that could be used for many things. Hand-operated winches have a history spanning over 2,500 years, originating in ancient Greece (circa 480 BC) to lift heavy objects and tighten cables for structures like pontoon bridges. These early devices, using drums and levers, were essential for medieval construction. Over time, they evolved from simple wooden, human-powered tools into sophisticated, metal-geared,, and self-locking manual lifting machines The earliest documented use was by the Greek historian Herodotus, who described wooden winch mechanisms used during the Persian Wars to tighten pontoon bridge cables across the Hellespont. By the 4th century BC, Aristotle documented their common use in pulley hoists and architecture. They became essential for hauling stone in medieval castle construction. The 18th and 19th centuries introduced iron and steel, transforming hand winches into more durable, efficient tools with improved mechanical advantage for shipping and industrial applications. Modern manual winches often include safety features like load pressure brakes that allow for controlled lifting and lowering. Throughout the 20th century, hand winches became specialized, such as being used on yachts for sailing, as noted with the 1903 America's Cup racing boat Reliance.
