In this mid-February garden update, we take a full walk around the garden to see whether spring is finally on its way — or if winter still has us firmly in its grip. After weeks of relentless rain (nearly 25cm collected already this year!), the garden is absolutely saturated. In this episode, we explore how the wet conditions and recent frosts have affected palms, bamboos, tree ferns, succulents, and tropical plants — and look for those first encouraging signs of new growth. 🌿 In This Video: The big blue bamboo that’s soon to be dug up to make way for a new lawn Winter appearances vs summer glory — what plants really look like in February Hardy vs tender plants: who’s thriving and who’s struggling Palm seedlings popping up everywhere! Tree ferns (protected vs unprotected) Agaves, yuccas, aeoniums & arid bed challenges in a very wet winter Daffodils, tulips, and early spring bulbs emerging 🌼 A surprise survivor: tender plants making it through two winters! Black bamboo in full flower (and likely at the end of its life cycle) Plans for a new 3m x 3.5m garden structure with decking The winter water table revealed beneath the soil Despite temperatures dipping to around -5°C earlier this winter, many plants are holding on well. With longer days ahead, even if cold snaps return, recovery should be quicker as sunlight strengthens. It’s a season of contrast — soggy soil, fungal spotting, hardy successes, and hopeful new shoots. Spring is teasing us… but we’re not quite there yet. 🌱 Thanks for watching!
