This record captures the frantic energy of the New York scene as it dove into the psychedelic vortex. Led by Jack Dougherty’s vocals, the band recorded these sessions with that classic Mainstream grit: dry drums and biting guitar. The intersection between science and music shows in the saturated mid-range and primitive compression that gives the rhythmic track its explosive quality. The engineering highlights punchy arrangements that pack multiple tempo shifts into short bursts. The Bandits are a perfect example of the jump from pure garage to experimental pop-psych. While other Mainstream groups went dark and brooding, these guys kept a whimsical energy even with their tripped-out themes. Original teal-and-black labels are notoriously hard to find clean because of the poor vinyl stock used at the time.
