Mamdani Cuts the Library?

❧ Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed cutting police budgets (yay!), but also libraries (boo, hiss). Shockingly, Eric Adams was not a good financial manager, and now New York City is facing a $5.4 billion budget deficit. In response, Mamdani has proposed cancelling 5,000 proposed hires at the NYPD and cutting police budgets by $22 million. This is excellent news, since the NYPD is already gargantuan and has a laundry list of corruption and abuse scandals; it shows that while Mamdani backed away from the “defund the police” slogan during his campaign, he’s willing to actually do it in practice. What’s less excellent is his proposal to slash public library budgets by $29 million, more than the NYPD cuts. This is exactly backwards, since libraries are more important than cops by an order of magnitude, and should be left alone.
