(2 Feb 1996) English/French/Russian President Clinton and French President Jacques Chirac have pledged to work together for a nuclear test ban, soothing a rift over France's recent series of nuclear tests. They were speaking at a joint news conference after the French leader told a joint meeting of the US Congress that France has stopped nuclear testing "once and for all". At a joint news conference in Washington, Clinton welcomed Chirac's assurances on nuclear testing and praised France's call for reform of the Atlantic alliance. SOUNDBITE: (English) I told President Chirac how pleased we in the United States are with France's recent decision to move closer to the military side of NATO, a move that will strengthen our alliance and a move that is very, very important to the United States. I also welcome the French efforts to build a stronger European defence identity within NATO. This will allow our European allies to deal more effectively with future security problems and spread the costs and risks of our leadership for peace while preserving the basic structure of NATO. SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President Chirac said that he was delighted by the American point of view with respect to European security matters. Clinton had to field many questions about the upcoming presidential elections. One reporter asked if he was too far to the left of popular Republican candidates. SOUNDBITE: (English) It depends on how they define the left. You know I'm still a little to the left of Atilla the Hun, I guess. It depends on how they define left and right. SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President Chirac, a conservative, hoped he wasn't the target of Clinton's pun. SOUNDBITE: (French) If I have understood correctly and if the translation was exact, which I do not doubt, President Clinton indicated that he was to the left of Atilla, and I would like to say that I don't think he meant me. SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French President SOUNDBITE: (English) I'm not sure at all I'm to the left of President Chirac. SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President The presidential couple later hosted a dinner for their French guests. The good humour continued. SOUNDBITE: I have long admired your political tenacity, and I have a suggestion that in France they should begin to call you Le Comeback Kid. SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S president Chirac sealed a successful day with a toast to the newly strengthened relationship between the two countries. SOUNDBITE: Long live the United States, long live France, long live the friendship between France and America. SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French president. The White House declined to bow to the world of French food and wine and produced a state dinner that was almost entirely American in ingredients and style. At the dinner for 130, each round table was centered with a towering vermeil candelabra topped with a flourish of fresh flowers. Chirac continues his visit with a tour of the Mid-West.
