The Lao Ba Zhang (Old Eight Palms) The master is performing the Lao Ba Zhang, also known as the "Old Eight Palms" or "Mother Palms." These are the foundational sequences of Bagua Zhang. Each of the eight palm changes corresponds to one of the eight trigrams from the I Ching and teaches a specific way to apply force, pivot the body, and change directions. 2. Key Technical Elements Circle Walking (Zou Quan): This is the hallmark of Bagua Zhang. The master moves along a circular path, which trains balance, agility, and the ability to flank an opponent. Mud-Wading Step (Tang Ni Bu): Notice how the master’s feet slide close to the ground. This specific footwork ensures stability and readiness to change direction at any moment. Twisting and Spiral Energy: Every movement involves a twist of the waist and spine. In Bagua, power is generated in the legs, directed by the waist, and expressed through a "coiling" or spiral motion in the arms and palms. Fluid Transitions: The movements are continuous and "soft" on the surface, resembling flowing water, but they contain hidden "hard" or explosive power. 3. Characteristics of the Sha Guozheng Lineage Master Sha Guozheng was a legendary figure in Chinese martial arts, often called the "Living Encyclopedia of Wushu." His lineage is famous for: Integration: Combining Bagua with elements of Xingyiquan (Form-Intention Fist) and Tongbeiquan. Elegance and Precision: The movements are exceptionally smooth and circular, focusing on the health of the joints and the flow of internal energy (Qi).
