This FNIRSI DSO-TC3 Multifunction Electronic Component Tester is one of many on market that seem to have gained popularity these days. It has other features like an IR decoder, digital oscilloscope, 0 - 4 Volts Voltmeter, and a function generator; however, its most handy feature is its ability to identify and test unknown components. The bottom left area has inputs. The ones labelled 1, 2, 3 are most commonly used. These are shorted internally where the number is identical, i.e. all 1s are connected together. Insert an unknown component across 2 different numbered terminals and the system will tell you what component it is and its value. Amongst components that can be tested are resistors, diodes, capacitors, inductors, etc.
