Various of memorial service held today for Abdul Haq which was reportedly attended and supported by his seven brothers STORYLINE: There was growing anxiety in the Afghan city of Jalalabad on Friday, as the local tribal leaders tried to reach a power sharing agreement. At the former Governor's Palace a meeting was held amongst the commanders and tribal leaders who now run the city. They are not the Northern Alliance but another anti-Taliban faction from the Pashtun ethnic group. They want to establish Jalalabad as theirs and not the Northern Alliance's and they are demanding a hefty slice of power. Representatives from several different factions and militias have met throughout the day at a Shura, or council, but seem to be making limited progress. The city of Jalalabad is full of armed men and there are concerns internationally that if an agreement is not reached then fighting may begin. The meeting coincided with the memorial service of Abdul Haq, who was executed by the Taliban on a mission inside Afghanistan last month. On Thursday his brother Haji Qadeer, a former Mujahideen fighter, swept back to the palace from which the Taliban evicted him five years earlier. He arrived in a convoy of vehicles from nearby Pakistan. Jalalabad was a centre of the guerrilla training camps used by Osama bin Laden and his al Qaida network and has been the target of intense U.S. bombing since October 7.
