Natural Light on Location: Hard Light vs Soft Light Beauty Shoot

Sometimes you don't need a lot of gear(lighting gear especially) to create beautiful images. Today you will be joining me outside/inside my flat in Cape Town for a behind the scenes look as i create some eye-catching beauty shots using natural light. I use Hard direct sunlight outside and then go inside for a much softer light using the window in the flat. The natural light in Capetown is unmatched and easily one of my favorites. For the hard light shot I shot at 12pm!!! I know oh my gosh why would you do that!! Well for the simple fact that I love the shadows and drama that you get from hush midday light sometimes. Stepup 1: OUTSIDE MIDDAY SUN In the first setup we are outside in direct sunlight against a white wall. I had my lastolite trilite reflector on the white side to fill in the heavy shadows. I had my makeup artist hold a cinefoil close and far from the model to create slices of light. Setup 2: INSIDE In the second setup we head inside the flat. There was some beautiful soft light coming in through the large window so I placed my model right by the window and added my lastolite trilite reflector to bounce the light all around her. This helped a lot so that I did not have to bump up my iso too high. Sometimes less is more, go outside and dont be afraid to use hard light.
