Carol Dwerck is an American Psychologist who introduced the world to the concept of Mindset. In her 2006 book ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’ she argues that, far from being ‘fixed’ an individual’s intelligence can be ‘grown’ by the application of hard work, error acceptance, training and tenacity. As she says: ‘In a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that's that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. They don't necessarily think everyone's the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.’ As with most areas of modern life, Process Safety is on the cusp of experiencing the AI tsunami. Underpinned by the remarkable longevity of Moore’s Law, which has for decades correctly predicted that the cost of a unit of computing power will half every 2 years, the capabilities of Process Safety relevant AI tools such as Open AI’s ChatGPT and Kairostech’s HAZOP Assistant are already a growing part of the Process Hazard Assessment Landscape. In this context, a fixed Process Safety Mindset is vulnerable and the development of an AI Adept one is crucial to be able to continue to effectively integrate new AI tools into our HAZOP teams. This paper will • Describe a history of the use of computing in Process Safety • Present the strengths and weaknesses of AI HAZOP tools and propose some psychological approaches which can harness and address them • Discuss the pros and cons of humanising AI tool output • Suggest a framework for assessing the best combination of AI tool autonomy and humanised output • Provide ‘War Stories’ to help populate and sculpt the Mindset The goal of the paper is to create a road map for the journey to an AI Adept Process Safety Mindset, such that your Process Hazard Assessment Teams can continue to minimise the likelihood of future Major Accidents.
