Hello Students! Welcome back to the channel. 📚✨ Have you ever wondered how the silicon chips inside our phones and laptops are protected? In today’s lecture, we break down one of the most important steps in manufacturing silicon integrated circuits: the *Oxidation Process* [1]. Even if you have zero background in VLSI or electronics, this video will make the concepts crystal clear for your exams and interviews! What you will learn in this video: What is Silicon Dioxide SiO_2Learn why its insulating and passivating properties are so crucial for making reliable integrated circuits The Oxidation Process: How we heat silicon wafers in a special oxidizing atmosphere (like water vapor or oxygen) to grow this protective layer. Wet Oxidation vs. Dry Oxidation: We compare the two main methods. Learn why Wet Oxidation (using water vapor at 900 C to 1000 C) is much faster, and why Dry Oxidation (using pure oxygen at 1200 C) produces a denser, higher-quality oxide layer. Oxide Growth Magic: Did you know that SiO_2 takes up roughly twice the volume of the original silicon? We explain how this causes the oxide to grow both above and below the original silicon surface, just like the field oxide in an n-channel MOS device.
