The sheep were filmed dashing into a branch of discount supermarket Penny, in the southern state of Bavaria, two days ago. After they barged past bewildered shoppers, the sheep lounged around in the checkout area for 20 minutes. Video footage captures the moment the sheep rushed into the supermarket, and another clip shows them eventually leaving. Some workers were apparently flustered by the woolly invasion and tried, unsuccessfully, to scare away the sheep by banging on the till counters. “They caused utter chaos,” ZDF, Germany’s public broadcaster, said in its report, which joked that the sheep had taken the supermarket’s slogan, “first to Penny’s”, literally. According to German media reports, the sheep had roamed into the supermarket after being separated from the rest of their flock. German embassy sees funny side Their shepherd believes they mistook a shopping bag for a feed bag and charged into the shop to find more food. The video footage has delighted Germans, and the German embassy in London indulged in a pun-filled social media post about the incident. The embassy wrote on X: “50 runaway sheep ram-paged through a German supermarket in rural Baa-varia, causing shear mania on Monday morning. “After breaking away from their 500-strong herd, the brazen sheep spent 20 mins milling around in the Penny supermarket before ewe-turning and seeing themselves out.” Penny’s has announced that it will provide the sheep with a year’s supply of free food, apparently because the stampede is turning out to be excellent publicity for the supermarket.
