On June 15, 1815, Napoleon Bonaparte launched his final campaign. With his Army of the North, he crossed into Belgium, seeking to divide and destroy the Allied forces of Wellington and Blücher before they could unite. The next day, near the village of Ligny, he achieved his last victory. Facing the Prussian army under Field Marshal Blücher, Napoleon struck with the precision and brilliance that had once made him master of Europe. Under relentless artillery fire, the French smashed through village after village — St. Amand, La Haye, and finally Ligny itself. Blücher’s counterattacks were heroic but doomed. Pinned beneath his fallen horse and nearly captured, the old marshal barely escaped with his life. Yet even in triumph, Napoleon’s star was fading. The coordination with Marshal Ney failed, and the Prussians escaped to fight again. Two days later, at Waterloo, they would return — and the Emperor’s glory would end forever.
