It connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) and helps to stabilize the knee joint. An ACL injury is a common sports-related injury that occurs when the ACL is torn or ruptured, usually due to sudden twisting or hyperextension of the knee. Symptoms of an ACL injury may include pain, swelling, instability, and difficulty in walking or bearing weight on the affected leg. The treatment for an ACL injury depends on the severity of the injury and the patient's activity level. In general, treatment options for ACL injuries include: Non-surgical treatment: This may include rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE) therapy, physical therapy, and bracing. Non-surgical treatment is usually recommended for patients with partial ACL tears or mild to moderate ACL injuries who are not involved in high-impact sports or activities. Rehabilitation is an important part of the treatment for ACL injuries, regardless of whether surgery is performed. Physical therapy can help to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the affected knee, and can help to prevent future knee injuries. Surgical treatment: if you have a tear in the ligament then you would need a surgical treatment. This may involve ACL reconstruction surgery, which involves replacing the torn ligament with a graft taken from another part of the patient's body or a donor. Surgery is typically recommended for patients with complete ACL tears or high-level athletes who want to return to high-impact sports or activities. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament, located in the knee, to restore its function after an injury. The torn ligament can either be removed from the knee, or preserved before reconstruction through an arthroscopic procedure. This graft is taken from the hamstring muscles of your body. There are other methods of reconstruction which are Bone patellar tendon bone (BPTB) autograft is a type of graft commonly used for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. In this procedure, a portion of the patellar tendon and bone is harvested from the patient's knee and used to reconstruct the torn ACL. The peroneus longus tendon runs along the outside of the ankle and helps to stabilize the foot and ankle during movement. Once the doctor has harvested the graft he will put it inside the knee joint to the tibia into the knee. Small holes are drilled into the femur and tibia bones to create bone tunnels. The graft tissue is threaded through the bone tunnels and secured in place with a bio screw on the knee side and an endo button on the femur side. There are other options available which helps. The newer all-inside ACL surgery involves holding the graft at both ends with a tight hold with the endo button. The difference is instead of a screw we will have a tight rope and a button at the tibial end, same on the femur as well. So with this slight modification, the recovery is faster in all-inside ACL reconstruction. This is the way ACL injuries are treated.
