Built at Doncaster in 1937, Bittern was designed for one purpose: pure speed. During the war, Bittern swapped glamour for grit — hauling troop trains, heavy freights, and whatever else the country needed. Post-war she continued to shine, thundering up and down the main line until her withdrawal in 1966. But Bittern wasn’t finished… not by a long shot. Saved from scrap and lovingly restored, she roared back to life in preservation — and in 2013 she made history of her own with a series of spectacular 90-mph high-speed runs, recreating the spirit of Britain’s pre-war express era.
