Delays in Referral of Isolated Cleft Palates (ICP’s): Learning from the UK’s Successful Early Detection Program With Dr. Alex Habel, Dr. Parakrama Wijikoon & Dr. Thanuja Herath In 2015, 30% of ICPs were going undetected in the UK. In response, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health introduced a Best Practice Guide for newborn palate visual inspection and the detection rate has since improved significantly. Across the world, too many families affected by ICP suffer poor nutrition, wasting and stunting, and increased mortality as a result of referral delays. Panelists: Dr. Alex Habel was the first Consultant Cleft Lip and Palate Pediatrician at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and spent over 20 years as a member of the Sri Lanka Cleft Lip and Palate Project. Dr. Parakrama Wijekoon is a senior consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery in the Faculty of Dental Sciences University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Dr. Thanuja Herath is a consultant Paediatrician and a Senior Lecturer attached to the Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Please join these experts in discussing how learning from this UK-based program could be applied in LMICs.
