Merle Haggard's 1968 autobiographical classic about a mother's love and a son's regret. ABOUT MERLE HAGGARD & MAMA TRIED Merle Haggard wrote "Mama Tried" from personal experience. He really did serve time in San Quentin - for attempted robbery at age 20. His mother Flossie really did try to keep him straight, and he really did break her heart. The song reached #1 on the country charts in 1968 and became Haggard's signature song. Its honest portrayal of regret and a mother's unconditional love resonated with anyone who'd ever disappointed someone who believed in them. Haggard was in San Quentin when Johnny Cash performed there in 1958. That concert inspired him to turn his life around.
